I went to Roussin again over the weekend. We saw more of the ocre queries and walked around the town some. I had the best ever Lavender ice cream. It's really kind of weird, but once you get used to it, it's so amazing.

Cemetary and old Church

This place was extremely creepy! There were long lines of very old stone coffins that dated back to the Middle Ages lining the walkway up to the church. They were all empty, obviously. Then inside the church, there wasn't much in the way of windows so it was very dark. It was also emptied out so everything echoed like a cave, and it was cold and dank too. Needless to say, I didn't stay in there very long, but it was really cool.

Cloisters - Arles

Part of the church was the cloisters, where the monks would (or maybe still do, i don't know) live. Again, I'm sure I'll be visiting more than one of these, so I'll try and keep it interesting.

Church in Arles

There are lots of these old churches in France, and I'm sure I will be posting many pictures of them on here in the near future, so to save you from any boredom that you hopefully haven't experienced yet, I will only be posting things that made each church interesting. That way you only get the highlights of each and it doesn't seem like I'm showing you the same ones over and over again.

The city of Arles

There will be several posts about Arles, which we went to on Friday. There was a lot to see there, and this site only allows about five pictures per post so... Here are just some general pictures in Arles. While we were there, the city was getting ready for a big bull fight, which I thought was weird until I thought about how close we were to Spain.

Wednesday continued

After the ocre queries we went to Fontaine de Vaucluse. The town was neat, but we went there because it's were a major river in France starts, and it comes from a spring in the overhanging cliffs surrounding the town. It was beautiful, unsurprisingly.

Wednesday

Nothing photographic happened on Tuesday in French Literature, but on Wednesday, in Rock Art again, we went on a field trip to a city called Roussin which is well known for its ocre querys and it lovely itself. The ocre there has been mined for literally thousands of years, and was used in prehistoric times for its color in cave paintings. It was really bright there, even though it was mostly cloudy because the ocre was so saturated.

Monday

We had our first day of classes. I actually only had one, though. It was World Rock Art, and our professor took us to the rock query that SCAD rents and it was huge and beautiful. There was graffiti there from the 1800's. There were lots of sculptures around by students as well, and of course, lots of Heineken bottle caps.

Exploring Continued

Here are a couple more from Sunday.

Exploring

On Sunday I walked around the town quite a bit and also went up to the chateau at the top of the hill. Rumor is that someone, can't remember who, owns it and stays there during the summer. We SCAD people are apparently quite fond of this man because he is the only person that the locals hate more that us. I haven't encountered any pissed off French locals, so I'm not sure this is still accurate.
